Throughout my coursework at College of Saint Mary, I have started developing my personal teaching philosophy. These beliefs are those that I intend to use in my future classroom. College of Saint Mary prepares us to be inclusive, innovative and really focus on good instruction. Getting to know each student and their individual needs will be my first goal in the classroom. I plan to teach in a high diversity classroom, so building background for each student will help me to be a successful teacher.
Making students aware of my expectations, but including them in making our classroom rules and procedures is a high priority. If students feel that rules and expectations are meaningful, they will be more likely to follow them. This will help us to have a positive environment. The positive environment will allow my students to feel safe, comfortable and confident around their peers.
I plan to have an inquiry-based classroom where we will do a lot of hands on activities, experiments and critical thinking activities. I also plan to integrate subjects together to help students connect the subject matter to other things we are learning. I will have a seating arrangement that is supportive of student collaboration and cooperation. I believe my students will do their best if I use different teaching methods and help them to use their senses. It is necessary to use direct instruction when introducing a complex topic so students are able to break down the main idea. I plan to use technology when using direct instruction and provide students with different note taking skills and strategies as well. When using direct instruction, it is necessary to take the time to make sure students are engaged so it is effective.
Teaching students the basic subject matter is important and highly necessary for them to continue their education, but I also believe in teaching them life skills, technology skills and problem solving skills that will help them in the real world. Allowing my students to interact and discover things on their own will help them to enhance these skills, while I am a guide on the side.
I strongly believe that encouraging my students to become better readers is one of the most important things I can do. Making reading something that is a choice can make all the difference. I plan to have a large classroom library and allow time for reading every day; I will also take time to read to my students so they can observe a good reading model.
Teachers have the power to motivate and inspire students to have a passion for learning. Being aware of new ideas and trends that are going on around the world can help me become a better teacher. Continuing to learn and gather information is one of the most important parts of teaching outside of the classroom. Developing skills continuously so that I can grow and better myself as new ideas are shared is one of my goals as a future educator.
I know that over time my philosophy will change, because I will develop new ideas and beliefs based on my experiences. Right now, my philosophy is pretty eclectic, because I believe in the parts of each of the main philosophies we have studied in class. Even as it changes, I think it will continue to be an eclectic philosophy.
